Losing anything is never fun, and lost payment cards are a very common experience. Here’s a few things to keep in mind.
Reduce Harm
Credit and debit card fraud is the most immediate risk, and even though you have some protection from those organizations it does require a bit of work on your part. Freezing is a great option in the case you do recover the card, but make sure to lock those accounts to prevent monetary damage.
Payment in the short term
Virtual payment can be a great alternative. Tools like Google and Apple Pay can make payments astoundingly simple (and secure). Apple can even issue a virtual credit card instantly if you’re eligible.
Borrowing is also an option. Instead of the honor system to pay them back, Venmo your friend (or a trusting stranger who may become a future friend) directly in exchange for cash to get you through the day.
Recovery
Often the best option with Payment Cards is to cut the loss and have it reissued. Once a card is out of your possession, it is compromised, so your bank can cancel it and reissue you one often for free.
